2. Drink vodka in the environment of native-speakers.
3. After a couple months of live communication russian language will be installed on the brain automatically. |

Learn single words - bad method. In some cases you need to learn phrases, expressions. And then single words
By the way, I learned English and Spanish by reading comics |

Good for who. It helps, yes, but whole mean of translated words, phrases, etc. might be twisted, pretty messed up.

Nah, 2 weeks are enough in most cases.
mutator: | how long it would take the most to learn the language for someone that knows little to nothing? |
It took me whole school life period to learn english basics, and about a year to learn how to speak and type on english without help of other people and translation sites\programms. As you noticed, I do some issues, still. But now I can speak and write decently freely. That's it.
If we speak about russian... well you don't need to know all its grammar specifics, just to know ABC, how it pronouncing and how to make phrases. Education might be hard but, as it was mentioned early by Herr Deathbringer, you may have help from natives and it would be even better if you find russian camp. The only thing is: avoid gopniks and TRI POLOSKI zealots. |

I wrote about it before. You can communicate with this site users in private dialog. I'll help you to realise forum functions, if you need. Also u can create Vkontakte account. Vkontakte is russian facebook copy, and it sucks. Awful design, many awful idiots, etc, but vk can help you to anderstand russian and russians. |

When did you last use it? It uses smart learning now.
I translated whole high-particle physics articles from russian to english (obviously would work in any direction) and not only I almost needed not to fix anything (!) - it did much better job in translating to english than I would do. By MUCH.
It actually UNDERSTANDS the language, the whole sentence/paragraph and translates it better than any non-professional native speaking translator.

do you recommend learning word by word or learning sentences? because it seems like sentences are different than individual words sometimes

Well, to start learning sentences you need to have some basic pool of words (and before that you need to know russian alphabet and basic spelling rules).
Sentences can help you to see how and when word is used, and understand new "missing" words from the context.
| because it seems like sentences are different than individual words sometimes |
If you want to be sure of the EXACT meaning of a particular word you can use wikipedia. You want to know what "chair" is - google wiki for a chair and then select "russian" in language selection.
There are also sites and apps that can pronounce it right for you in russian.
Be sure to learn some verbs and such too, not only nouns and you can't make sentence without such.
On various streaming services I think you can listen to russian with english subtitles or visa versa or even have dubbing with the ability to hear the original talk.
